Tech Writer, Knowledge Analyst, and Video Creator. Specialising in computer security and AI cyber threats.

I’m an experienced and versatile Technical Writer with a strong focus on computer security and AI security solutions. Since 1993, I’ve worked across a range of roles in the computer security industry—starting in technical support and evolving into technical writing and video creation. My goal throughout has been consistent: to help customers fix their issues and to simplify complex concepts and make them accessible to everyone.

Documentation alone informs. But true understanding emerges at the intersection of clear documentation and compelling video.
— Rodney D. Cambridge

With 30 years of experience in the industry at household names such as Dr Solomons, Intel, and McAfee, I have developed deep expertise across the security landscape. I'm well-versed in a wide range of topics, including privacy, identity, viruses, malware, trojans, worms, spyware, phishing, quishing, hacking, deepfakes, shallowfakes, AI scams, vulnerabilities, and more.

Writing

I’ve been a Technical Writer since 2005. Initially I documented and communicated essential information to both internal Technical Support Agents and external enterprise customers. Latterly, I’ve focused on creating content for home users.

I’m also a Knowledge Analyst, which goes hand-in-hand with tech writing. In this part of my role, I collect relevant internal and external data (such as customer feedback and operational metrics) to help identify knowledge gaps that need filling. My skills in these areas include:

  • Knowledge Management: Creating, organizing, and updating Knowledge Base content.

  • Analysis: Interpreting data to identify patterns, insights, and opportunities.

  • Reporting: Producing dashboards, summaries, or presentations to communicate findings to stakeholders.

  • Collaboration: I work regularly with orgs such as Tech Support, Product Management, and Marketing to align my knowledge efforts with overall business goals.

Videos

While at McAfee, I set up the official McAfee Technical Support YouTube channel, where the most viewed support articles were turned into ‘how to’ videos. I produced each of the videos on the channel, scripting, recording, and building each one mainly using Techsmith Camtasia but also using other tools such as After Effects, and Photoshop.

As I spearheaded this project, I saw it grow from zero subscribers to over 30k today. I guess you could say it was my baby!

Books

I’ve written and self-published two books:

  • How NOT To Write an App, where I use my experiences as an app developer to take the reader step by step through the things that should, and shouldn't, be done when creating an app for iOS or Android mobile devices.

  • How NOT To Use Your Smartphone, where I show users of smartphones and tablets how best to protect themselves and their devices, and how to avoid becoming a victim of ID theft, credit card fraud, utilities fraud, or worse.

Patents

As a security-focused thought leader and innovator, I’ve had seven security-related US and EU patents granted in my name, with others pending. These patents cover a range of topics, including:

  • Predicting the incidence of a virus

  • Bi-directional updating of an antivirus database

  • Crowdsourced reputations for wireless networks
